Back to Blighty

Currently im in India for a week having arrived from Uganda.

The refreshing chill from Kampalas permanent equatorial autumn really struck me.

But as of next Monday ill hit an even bigger chill, If I can get a landing slot at Heathrow, as im back in blightly for a year long maternity cover contract.

And yes its Cambridge City Council as Planning Policy Manager.

Some irony here the home of my biggest blog protagonists Colin Wiles and Pontus Rendall.

I should say the freedom of not working in UK local government has enabled me to be very frank with some UK local authorities.  In my new position I will have to be more restrained.  I would stress however that the views expressed have never been aimed at one particular party, ive criticised councils run by all three, and are aimed at helping cllrs make tough decisions. Rather surprisingly this has led to some issues raised here being frequently mentioned at council meetings.

So I hope to continue blogging though I imagine the time for it and scope of what I am free to write about will diminish.

  1. Andrew, can I suggest a pseudonym so you can continue with the frankness!!

  2. Congratulations best wishes. I look forward to watching what emerges over the next year. Your incisive comments in http://bit.ly/XXfYbT on Cambridge Local Plan set a high standard to achieve. I hope you can aid in moving to ‘a visionary approach of spatial solutions both for cities and wider sub-regions’. I hope you are successful.

If you think the “Duty to co-operate” is somewhat lacking in the LPAs around Milton Keynes, I think the challenges from some of the councils (certainly not all) in the Greater Cambridge area will be greater when it comes to visionary solutions in the sub-region – #bunnyhuggers and #supermarketgate come to mind! (Latest decisions due at a Fenland DC meeting at 2:30pm today.)

    Mike

  3. I heard about this only recently. Welcome!
